The System of Rice Intensification (SRI): Revisiting Agronomy for a Changing Climate
Whether production costs
and labour requirements for SRI methods are
higher, equal or lower than in conventional rice
production will depend on what is the current
practice, the degree of intensification, and the
types of changes needed to move to SRI
practices (Thakur et al. 2013). Significantly
higher yields increase, both labour and input
factor productivity with SRI, raising farmers’
income from rice in most cases by 50% or more
with SRI adoption, and with all three of the
scenarios noted above (Thakur et al. 2013;
Kathikeyan et al. 2010; Uphoff 2016).
