SUSTAIN Pro project, in collaboration with the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) and Norad held a SRI training Feb. 12 and 20 in Kilmbero

As the new rice-growing season nears in the Kilombero landscape, the SUSTAIN Pro project, in collaboration with the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) @official_taritanzania, has conducted refresher training for Village Agricultural Extension Officers (VAEOs) and farmers in Itete and Njage villages on the 19th and 20th of this month.
The training focused on reinforcing the key principles of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), including proper nursery preparation, levelling, transplanting young seedlings, recommended spacing, mechanical weeding, alternate wetting & drying water and soil fertility management.
The refresher sessions aim to ensure consistency and standardisation of SRI practices across project villages while strengthening extension officers’ capacity to effectively monitor implementation and address field challenges. By enhancing technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and farmer–extension collaboration, this initiative seeks to increase adoption of SRI, improve productivity so as to boost household incomes, and promote sustainable rice farming techniques.
